In line with the tradition established over the past few years, girls continued to outperform boys in the SSLC as well as the matriculation and Anglo-Indian school streams. In all, 75.5 per cent of the 6,20,798 school-based candidates, who appeared for the SSLC examinations, came out successful, said the Director of Government Examinations C. Palanivelu. Last year the pass percentage was 70.7. Outdoing boys this year too, 77 per cent of the girls came out successful improving on last year's 73.7 per cent; the pass percentage among boys was 74 (68.3 last year). A total of 77,583 school-based candidates appeared for the matriculation examinations; of them 91 per cent got through a one per cent drop from last year. Here too, the girls performed better a success rate of 92.7 per cent against 89.6 among boys. More than 2.70 lakh SSLC examination candidates (57.7 per cent) and over 61,100 matriculation candidates (78.8 per cent) got 60 per cent or above in the aggregate. B. Hemapriya of the Jayarani Girls HSS, Salem, topped the SSLC students, getting 493 marks out of 500. She was closely followed by Sai Saravanan of the Santhome High School, Chennai (492), and T. Nishanthi of St. Anne's, Cuddalore (491). Among the matriculation candidates, S. Naveen of the Srividya Mandir MHSS, Uthangarai in Dharmapuri district, topped the list with 1054 marks out of 1100, followed by G. Poornima of the Kalaimagal Kalvi NGMS, Erode (1053), and M. Swathy of the DAV MHSS, Mogappair East, Chennai (1049). Ninetyseven per cent of the 4,899 candidates passed the Anglo-Indian School-Leaving examination, and 86.9 per cent of them got 60 per cent or above in the aggregate. The first three rankers are R.K. Kartikeyan of the Stanes HSS, Coimbatore (972 marks), T. Nivethitha of St. Joseph's AIHSS, Tiruchi (970), and K. Rahul of Campion, Tiruchi (968).
