The byelection has been caused by the death, in a helicopter crash, of Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi, former Lok Sabha Speaker, in March. A feature of the election this time is that all major political parties, including the Congress, had decided not to field their candidate so that G.Vijaya Kumari, the TDP candidate and widow of Balayogi, would get elected unanimously. But the BSP and the RPI decided to field their candidates necessitating the election. In all 1084 polling stations--338 each for men and women separately and the remaining common polling stations--were set up.
