Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Hoping for peace

Sir, — Political pressure is being brought to bear on the governments of India and Pakistan to use nuclear weapons in the approaching but avoidable war. Even after 55 years of Independence, the ultimate decisions on the lives of millions of people in India and Pakistan lie with a handful of political leaders. As the nuclear arms capacity has become available to both the countries, the danger has increased.

When will India produce another great soul of Gandhiji's vision and courage to translate the universal wish for peace into action? If we do not create public opinion against the use of nuclear weapons, India and Pakistan will sooner than later use n-bombs and make peace on earth impossible.

Omar Luther King,
Shillong
