Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Dangerous portents

Sir, — India has rightfully termed the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf's television address disappointing and dangerous. Disappointing, because by still lending his support to the Kashmir cause, Gen. Musharraf has clearly displayed his complete lack of will in resolving this crisis peacefully. He speaks of combating terrorism in his country only to appease the international community. But he still feels that violence being unleashed in Kashmir is justified. Dangerous, because the double standards the General is resorting to is bringing both India and Pakistan closer to the brink of war which is not in anybody's interests. It is highly unlikely that Gen. Musharraf would crack down on terrorism if his past record was anything to go by.

V. Rajesh,
Mumbai
