50.91 p.c. make the grade in SSLC

BANGALORE May 31. The State recorded an overall pass percentage of 50.91 in the SSLC examination conducted by the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board in March this year. This is almost equal to the percentage of students who made the grade last year (50.92).

Of the 5,51,618 students, including private candidates, who appeared for the examination, 3,12,339 have emerged successful.

As many as 5,40,042 fresh candidates took the examination, while there were 11,576 private candidates and 1,61,743 repeaters.

In all, 7,13,361 students appeared for the examination. Among candidates appearing for the first time, 51.72 per cent got through in the examination, and among private candidates, 12.93 per cent cleared it. Only 19 per cent of the repeaters were successful this time.

The results were announced at the institutions, whose students appeared for the examination, and the Board office at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Announcing the results, T.M.Vijay Bhaskar, Commissioner for Public Instruction, said marks statements and pass certificates would be sent to the institutions by June 15.

Girls performed better with 53.76 per cent of them getting through in the examination, than boys who recorded 48.54 pass percentage. Of the 3,01,478 boys who appeared for the examination, 1,46,351 got through, while among the 2,50,140 girls who took the examination, 1,34,486 made the grade.

Dakshina Kannada topped the list with a pass percentage of 78.75. It scored 71.14 per cent in last year's examination. Udupi came second with 76.67 per cent followed by Uttara Kannada with 69.61 per cent. Yadgir recorded the lowest pass percentage of 29 among the educational districts.

The number of malpractice cases came down to 1,077 this year compared to 1,413 cases last year. The answer scripts were evaluated at 140 camps in 19 districts. As many as 17,125 valuators evaluated 48,21,917 answer papers, Mr. Bhaskar said.

Students in urban areas fared better with 53.54 pass percentage compared to those in the rural areas, where 49.06 per cent of the candidates who took the examination emerged successful. As much as 53.76 per cent of students belonging to private institutions cleared the examination, while 40.47 per cent students from government schools got through.

Students fared better in the First Language with a pass percentage of 84.59, while they registered the least pass percentage of 40.96 in Mathematics. Among Scheduled Caste candidates, 36.7 per cent cleared the examination and of the Scheduled Tribe students, 36.72 per cent made the grade. As much as 41.77 per cent of backward tribes students emerged successful.

Mr. Bhaskar said 12,012 (2.22 per cent) distinctions were awarded, of which boys got 5,369 distinctions and girls 6,643. Schools with pass percentage of less than 20 would be derecognised by the Education Department.

The department was thinking of starting evaluation work at the taluk level to ensure better participation from teachers, he said.

Retotalling

June 10 is the last date for submitting applications for retotalling for all subjects, and to get photocopies of only Mathematics answer papers.

Students have to send their applications with attestation of heads of institutions concerned to the Divisional Secretaries of Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board regional offices in the four divisions.

The supplementary examination will commence from June 24. The last date for sending applications through schools for the examination is June 11.
