Telephone directory released

Pondicherry May 31. The Managing Director of the Pondicherry Government-run AFT Mill, P. R. Ramanathan, today released the much-awaited telephone directory. He said the time had come for the communication sector to gear to face the global competition.

The Senior Operational Manager of the Hindustan Lever Limited, Mohammad Wazim Hindri, who received the first copy, traced the development the HLL had made in the Union Territory over the last 10 years.

The General Manager, BSNL, Pondicherry, A. Subramanian, spoke on the sustained efforts taken by the organisation for the release of the directory.

This is the first directory made available to the subscribers after the BSNL came into existence.

A total of 85,000 directories were needed in the Union Territory. About 67,000 copies, with supplements relating to changed numbers of new exchanges (Moolakulam and Rainbow Nagar), were now released. The last directory was issued in 1998. The present directory had been updated up to June 30, 2001.

The HLL representative released a CD containing the phone numbers and Mr. Ramanathan received the first disc. The representative of the Pondicherry Software Limited and producer of the disc, Jayaprakash, was felicitated.

The BSNL Deputy General Manager, H. C. Mohanty, the Deputy General Manager (Finance), S. N. Rajendran, and the Salem-based Tele Link company representative, R. Subramanian, were among those spoke.

Mementos were given to children of the staff, who scored ranks in the recent public examinations.
