No major incident in Acharapakkam

By Our Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM MAY 31. No major untoward incident was reported during the by-election to the Acharapakkam (reserved) constituency today.

The AIADMK candidate, A. Poovaraghamoorthy, was among the first to cast his vote at his native place of Polambakkam. While men were seen in large numbers in booths in the first few hours, more and more women started trickling in as the day progressed.

At a few booths near Chithamur and Acharapakkam, the Electronic Voting Machines failed, but were quickly attended to by two engineers from the Bharat Electronics Limited. (BEL). At Vilambur, scores of voters were taken by surprise when informed that they could not cast votes as their names did not figure in the final draft roll. When this was brought to the attention of the District Collector, K. Rajaraman, he sent a senior official to the spot. After verification of records they were allowed to vote.
