Japanese grant for pulse polio

NEW DELHI JUNE 3. The Japanese Government has extended a grant of Rs. 29 crores to the United Nations Children's Fund for utilisation in a project in India for pulse polio immunisation campaign to be undertaken in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, West Bengal and Bihar.

The agreement was signed by the Japanese Ambassador to India, Hiroshi Hirabayashi, and the UNICEF representative, Maria Calivis.

The campaign will target 25.9 million children under the age of five during the national immunisation days (NIDs) to be observed this year.

The supplies and equipment would be procured by the UNICEF and made available for the campaign. The grant would also cover operational expenses.

With the grant assistance, Japanese aid to immunisation campaign in India would total up to over Rs. 184 crores, an official release said.
