Further to the news item published on April 6 relating to the transfer of judicial officers, the Hon'ble High Court of Madras took up suo motu contempt proceedings against the Editor, Reporter, Printer and Publisher of The Hindu. The High Court was of the view that the news item attributed certain ``motive and aspersions which were not fair''. The matter came up for hearing before the Hon'ble High Court on June 3, 2002. The Editor, Reporter, Printer and Publisher have tendered unconditional apologies for the publication of the above news item. It is reiterated that this newspaper has the highest respect for the judiciary and it was never our intention to attribute motives or cast aspersions on the functioning of the judiciary. This newspaper has always stood for the independence of the judiciary and will continue to do so, without giving room for any such impression in the future. This is published pursuant to the apology and undertaking given to the High Court.
