Warn countries sponsoring terror: PM

ALMATY JUNE 3. Amid tense standoff on the border with Pakistan, the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, said the first summit of the 16-nation Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building measures in Asia (CICA) was the ideal forum for sending out a warning to the countries sponsoring terrorism.

Asserting that no corner in the world was safe from terrorism, he said the CICA summit should come out with a stern warning to nations sponsoring terrorism. Without naming Pakistan, Mr. Vajpayee said ``India is continuously fighting against terrorism sponsored by one nation''.

In his speech at a luncheon hosted by the Kazakh President, Nursultan Nazarbayev, here today, he said the purpose of terrorism was to weaken the society and its cultural fabric. The day-long conference tomorrow should issue a strong warning to the countries which sponsored terrorism, he said. With both Mr. Vajpayee and the Pakistan President, Pervez Musharraf, present here, India made it clear that it would not be persuaded by other countries to open a dialogue with Pakistan till cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir was stopped.

On the other hand, Gen. Musharraf said he was prepared `unconditionally'' to hold talks on the Kashmir crisis with Mr. Vajpayee during the summit.

``I don't have any conditions (for a meeting)," he told a news conference after a meeting with Mr. Nazarbayev. On the prospects of a Russian mediation, Gen. Musharraf said the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, was ``in a very important position to play a definitive role in mediation between India and Pakistan.'' — UNI, PTI, AFP
