Letters to the Editor
Sir, This refers to P.V. Indiresan's article, `For a way-out in J & K' (May 30), in which he says that economic deprivation and lack of development are the root causes of increased militancy in Kashmir. That growing unemployment forced the youth to take to the path of terrorism and that the Government should address the real problems of Kashmiris and take remedial measures to assuage their feelings is the theme of our intellectuals and media whenever they discuss the terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. If economic and social problems are the root-cause of militancy, then we should be witnessing secessionist activities in Bihar, Orissa and other parts of north India also, where the people are deprived of basic amenities and are living in precarious conditions. Kashmir is a burning issue because our politicians, media and intellectuals are afraid of condemning Muslim terrorism and taking the fight to its logical end.
