Caste-based quota in U.P. police

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW JUNE 4. The Uttar Pradesh Government has decided to fix a caste-based quota for appointment of officers heading police stations in the State.

According to the formula decided by the Chief Minister, Mayawati, 50 per cent of the posts of Station House Officers (SHOs) will be filled by officers belonging to the general category and 20 per cent by Scheduled Caste officers. Twenty five per cent will go to other backward castes and five per cent to the minority communities. If there is a shortfall of officers from the SC category, fresh recruitment will be made.
