The two Jihad Committee activists, Imam Ali and Hyder Ali, escaped from custody after armed gangsters opened fire on escort police and lobbed countrymade explosives. While Hyder Ali was nabbed within a week, Imam Ali is still on the run. More than 25 persons have been arrested either for executing the attack or for harbouring the accused after their escape. The SIT, which took over the investigation from the local police, is expected to file charge sheets against all the accused this week. Official sources said the police were awaiting clearance from the District Collector, who is currently on leave. ``Only the District Magistrate (Collector) can accord sanction for prosecution under the Arms Act,'' the District Revenue Officer (DRO), P. Kadiresan, said. All the 23 accused, except Hyder Ali who is lodged in the Chennai prison, were produced before the Tirumangalam judicial magistrate today, who extended their remand period till June 18. Meanwhile, it was yet another close shave for Imam Ali by the skin of his teeth as a heavily armed police team stormed his hideout an hour before he moved out in the State borders a few days ago. ``We received a specific information about Imam Ali's presence there and surrounded the locality with an elite striking force. However, the fugitive and his associates had left just then,'' the IG (South Zone), T. Rajendran, told The Hindu.
