One-man, one-post Bill receives assent

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI June 4 . The Governor, P. S. Ramamohan Rao, has given assent to the controversial Bill barring MLAs and MPs from holding the post of chief of local bodies.

With the State Government set to notify the legislation in the Government gazette tomorrow, the Chennai Mayor and DMK MLA, M. K. Stalin will have to choose between the two elected posts within 15 days.

The Governor has also given assent to another contentious legislation, Essential Services Maintenance Act, banning strikes by workers in essential services including the transport sector.

All other 35 Bills including the one prohibiting smoking and spitting in places of public use, passed during the budget session of the Assembly have also received Raj Bhavan approval.

However, the Bill amending the Criminal Procedure Code to enable extension of remand of undertrials through videoconferencing is likely to be sent to the Union Government for President's assent.
