Sir, The proposal by the recently privatised and highly profit-making Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), a premier organisation providing large-scale telecom services, to invest Rs.1,200 crores in Tata Teleservices needs a thorough probe. The decision of the sub-committee, constituted by the VSNL, to irreversibly finalise the details of placing a huge amount in the private company is intriguing. The move will certainly affect the public utility service and the economy derived thereof. The understanding reached between the managements of the VSNL and Tata Teleservices with regard to the diversion of this huge amount in the VSNL, in which the Government has a stake, will put the survival of this premier telecom giant at stake.
