Letters to the Editor
Sir, It had all the ingredients of a sentimental pot-boiler. A small impoverished third world country of coloured youth taking on their one-time mighty masters. They dare to challenge the champion nation which had colonised their country for decades; that too in a white-man's game. The world looks on with a patronising attitude to begin with and then with stunned disbelief as the champions are matched and then outplayed by the challengers. When the match ends there is a full-throated roar of approval from every struggling, down- trodden oppressed throat across Asia and Africa. The only thing lacking from the script of Lagaan was the torrential rain which flooded the field at the end of the other match.
Vijayalatha Balagopal,
