By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI June 6. A group of 104 child labourers rescued from Bangalore arrived in Chennai Central today, en route to Kolkata.

Members of the Campaign Against Child Labour - Tamil Nadu (CACL-TN), today met the students at the Station.

Around 400 bonded child labourers below 18 years, mainly from West Bengal, employed for crafting gold jewellery in Bangalore were rescued on May 23. Over 100 child labourers below the age of 14 were employed under the pretext of training them. All the children were from different districts of West Bengal, particularly from Howrah, Hoogly and Midnapore.

CACL-TN is taking the responsibility for providing hospitality for the children on the journey back to West Bengal. They were escorted by 21 law enforcement personnel from West Bengal and CACL - West Bengal will take responsibility at Kolkata to ensure that the children were rehabilitated and restored to the care of their families, Ossie Fernandes of the CACL said.

He said that the children were working in a room without ventilation and the fumes of chemicals that caused lung infection and radiation effect was suffocating. The CACL said that children were not paid for the last four years, except Rs. 50 per week for food. Some children also had injury marks on their bodies and had to work up to nine hours a day.
