First one-dayer washed out

KINGSTON, Jamaica, June 6. The first one-day international in the five-match series between West Indies and New Zealand was abandoned because of heavy rain on Wednesday.

West Indies had produced a fine display of controlled bowling on a lively pitch to dismiss New Zealand for 176 in 49.4 overs.

But a thunderstorm during the lunch break left the pitch waterlogged and umpires Asoka de Silva of Sri Lanka and Dominican Billy Doctrove eventually called off the match. The second one-match will take place in St Lucia on Saturday.

Kingston has suffered heavy rainfall in recent weeks and two of the scheduled one-day matches in the five-match series between West Indies and India were also abandoned there last month.

Having won the toss, New Zealand had struggled to cope with a wicket that was livelier than expected and West Indies pacemen Mervyn Dillon and Cameron Cuffy tore through the New Zealand top order early on.

Dillon collected the scalps of openers Nathan Astle and Stephen Fleming for just one run between them. Astle had one run on the board when he edged to West Indies captain Carl Hooper who took the catch at second slip in the third over.

Two overs later, Fleming pulled to Ryan Hinds at square leg for a duck. The top order continued to crumble when Nevin lifted Cuffy's delivery into Ramnaresh Sawan's hands, reducing New Zealand to 14 for three after just 7.1 overs.

Chris Harris then lost his patience with Chris Gayle's off break spinning and mistimed a sweep straight to Pedro Collins. Craig McMillan gave the visitors some much-needed backbone, scoring 69 runs in 101 balls.
