Arafat emerges

Ramallah (West Bank) June 6. The Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, emerged on Thursday from his damaged office building, saying Israel's latest attack on his compound would only strengthen the resolve of the Palestinians.

Mr. Arafat flashed a victory sign as he was greeted by more than 100 cheering civilians and security guards. — AP

He emerged from the building two hours after Israeli troops left the compound, ending a six-hour siege during which they blew up three buildings and exchanged fire with Mr. Arafat's security guards.
