This was decided at a meeting held today in Istanbul between the Civil Aviation Minister, Shahnawaz Hussain and the Turkish Minister of Transport, Oktay Vural, to discuss air links between India and Turkey. A Turkish delegation would visit India shortly for discussions on resumption of flights between the two countries. Mr. Hussain who is in Turkey to participate in the International Civil Aviation Equipment Exposition 2002, (AIRTEX 2002) which was inaugurated on Friday offered to initiate a dialogue with Turkey to further strengthen the tourist potential between the two countries. He said India had taken steps to use satellite technology in communication, navigation, surveillance which was on par with the latest in devolopment of global civil aviation through implementation of satellite based augmentation system. The new system would help the aircraft to increase air space capacity, reduce congestion in high density air space and also enable aircraft to take a straight route from origin to destination by saving flying time and fuel. India had initiated the implementation of International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) satellite-based `Communication and Navigation Air Traffic Management System' (CNS-ATM) at all Indian airports. He said the Government had decided to develop all major international airports in India to world standards through long-term leasing to private operators. Mr. Vural said safety and security should be accorded the top most priority in the civil aviation sector today and civil aviation infrastructure should be upgraded keeping that in view.
