Indians Rameshwori Devi, who won the women's 500m time trial finals of the SAARC cycling championship in New Delhi on Sunday.
Premojit Singh zoomed into the lead early on and maintained a steady pace throughout to win the 1000m Time Trial for men in 1 minute 10.738 seconds. His teammate K. Inder Kumar Singh was a little over two seconds behind and settled for silver with a timing of 1:12.494. Bangladesh's Shahidul Islam came third with 1:25.730. India's best bet in the women's section, Ch. Rameshwori Devi, warmed up for the tougher events winning gold medal with consummate ease, in 500m Time Trial. Rameshwori's under-40-second timing has brought a smile on the face of the cycling enthusiasts. After an absence for 12 years, India will be fielding a cycling team in this year's Asian Games in Pusan. In the 1998 Bangkok Asiad, the bronze medal went to a cyclist who clocked 38-plus seconds. With Nepal and Sri Lanka keeping themselves out of the tracks events, India continued its domination over Bangladesh. Of the four gold medals decided so far, India has captured all. In the 1000m Sprint for men, K. Inder Kumar Singh set up a gold medal clash with his teammate Probin Singh. Inder Kumar won his semifinal race against Joynul Abadin of Bangladesh. His preliminary timing of 12.445 was the best among the four riders. Probin defeated Shah Iftekhar Alam in the first semifinal. A similar story was scripted by the Indian women as O. Beena Kumari and H. Ranjita Devi won their respective semifinal heats and stormed into the final. Beena Kumari timed her 1000m Sprint in 17.139 seconds while Ranjita Devi had the time of 19.882. Then there was the race every Indian official had waited for. The 4000m Team Pursuit for men is the key event India has been focusing on. Its team is being rigorously trained for the Asian Games. The marked Indian team comprising Premojit Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Sukhjinder Singh and Sarabjeet Singh, timed 4 minute 49.337 seconds to top the qualifying race. The foursome will face a second string Indian squad of Paramjit Singh, Sandeep Malik, Zorawar Singh and Dharmender, in the final. The results: Men: 1000m Time Trial: 1.
