Arrest politically motivated, says Geelani

RANCHI JUNE 9. The arrested leader of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, today said he was fighting for peace in the Kashmir Valley. "Although I am seen as a terrorist with an anti-Indian stance, the fact remains that I had been fighting for the restoration of peace in the Kashmir Valley,'' he told presspersons here.

The former Hurriyat chairman, arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, was brought here and lodged in the Birsa Munda Central jail. To a query, he said he was not aware of the Government's intentions.

Speaking to the news channel, Aaj Tak, after his arrest in New Delhi, Mr. Geelani said his arrest was ``politically motivated.''

``We stand for peace in Jammu and Kashmir and want a permanent resolution of the Kashmir issue.''
