According to authoritative sources in the Union Law Ministry, the Government examined the proposal sent by the High Court and the Tamil Nadu Government for increasing the judges' strength to 57 from the present 42. It was decided to approve in principle raising of the strength to 47 from the date of commencement of the Madurai Bench, possibly by the year-end. It has been suggested that of the five judges to be posted to Madurai, two could form a Division Bench, one can handle writ petitions, one civil and another, the criminal cases. The Centre has made it clear to the High Court and the State Government that the formal notification for increasing the strength would be issued only after it was satisfied about the creation of infrastructure such as Court buildings, quarters for Judges, and staff for functioning of the Madurai Bench. According to the sources, the Centre is satisfied that the Madurai Bench will be a boon to the litigants from the southern districts and has sought particulars from the High Court, regarding the number of cases to be transferred there.
