3 killed in Pak. shelling

Jammu June 11. Three persons were killed and seven injured in Pakistani shelling along the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu region since yesterday.

Police told The Hindu that last evening Pakistani forces opened mortar fire on the Treva border outpost in the Arnia sector close to the IB in the Jammu region. Panic gripped the area, which is close to the IB, as the shelling began when some migrants had just returned. The civilians again left for the migrant camps.

Pakistani troops resorted to mortar and artillery firing targeting civilian areas near the LoC in the Poonch sector in the wee hours of today. In Maglaan area in Poonch sector, two civilians were injured in the shelling. Poonch town was also heavily shelled. At around 3 a.m. Pakistani shells hit the area near the sensitive Poonch airstrip, mainly used for defence purposes. No damage was reported.

The shelling continued in Digwar, Karikarmara, Bhawani, Sajla Mankote, Mendhar and Balakote areas. Reports from the Rajouri sector said one Army officer was killed early today in Jhangar. The deceased has been identified as Lieutenant Abhey.

Intermittent shelling was seen in Pallanwala area of Akhnoor sector on the LoC.
