Talking to newsmen at Krishnankovil near here yesterday, K. Kannan, Dean, School of Biotechnology of the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, said 120 schools had been chosen throughout the country in the first phase. Plus-One and Plus-Two students would have biotechnology as an optional subject, along with regular subjects. Thirty schools in South India would offer the subject. Dr. Kannan said since biotechnology was inter-disciplinary, efforts were being made to involve teachers handling all science subjects, including Computer Science. He claimed that for the first time in the country a technology-oriented subject was being introduced at the school-level. Four units of textbooks had already been prepared for each of the two classes. Seventy per cent of marks had been earmarked for theory, 15 per cent for practicals and 15 per cent for project work.
