Letters to the Editor
Sir, This is with reference to the report on the candidature of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for the post of President. In 1977, Morarji Desai made a dramatic offer to the celebrated dancer and Kalakshetra founder, Rukmini Devi Arundale, to become the President, which was sadly turned down by the great lady. The office of the President is largely ceremonial and it is time that eminent persons from different walks of life are given the honour of holding this position as the way they look at problems would be different from the "run of the mill" politicians. It is in this context that all political parties should welcome the candidature of Dr. Kalam for the high office. V. Shrinivasan, Bangalore
