Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Election or selection

Sir, — When the time comes to elect the country's President, the choice is between the candidate of the ruling party and that of the Opposition. If a certain party's candidate is selected for the most respected and highest post in the country, he would only be partial to that party. There should be a proper system where the President should be elected instead of being selected. Voting should be done not only by the ruling and Opposition parties but also by prominent personalities from all walks of life. If a candidate is elected unanimously, it gives him a lot of confidence and enables him to concentrate on his work rather than thinking about appeasing the parties which selected him.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance's choice of Abdul Kalam shows that it is not anti-Muslim and the Opposition should support it as this would also send a strong message to the Pakistani President, Pervez Musharraf.

Mani Nookala,

Hyderabad
