Sir, This is regarding the Government's move, since given up, to tax railway passes (June 10). About 40 years back, the Income Tax exemption limit was Rs. 3,000 per annum. Most of the railway employees, except perhaps officers, were outside the tax bracket then. Today, the exemption limit is Rs. 50,000 but almost all the railway employees, except perhaps class IV employees are I-T assessees. There is no justification in the demand of the railway employees. The Government cannot discriminate between railway employees and others in the treatment of perquisites for tax purposes. A. Sankaran, Chennai
