Letters to the Editor
Sir, Abdul Kalam is the right candidate for President. If he is elected, it will definitely raise the stature of India in the international community. India has now a chance to elect a person of the highest standing, devoid of any political connections, to this office long after it got politicised when Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister. All political parties should cast their differences aside and support Dr. Kalam's candidature whole-heartedly. The people are losing confidence in the political system which has hardly been able to measure up to their expectations and the election of Dr. Kalam will give some hope that the person occupying the highest office can relate to their needs. The parties should evolve a consensus to elect a person of similar stature as the Vice-President so that he (or she) can be elevated to the position of President after five years. In this manner, the long forgotten healthy conventions can be restored. R. Murali Sundararajan, Memphis, U.S.
