Letters to the Editor
Sir, The selection of Abdul Kalam as the Presidential candidate is to be welcomed by all. The fact that he does not have political experience should not come in his way. Although the provisions under the Constitution, the various laws, rules and regulations and precedents are important, they are not an end in themselves. What is required is sound common sense, cool judgment and honesty of purpose. Dr. Kalam has all these qualities in abundance. With his scientific temper, we can expect him to bring a breath of fresh air to Rashtrapati Bhavan. Let us hope that Dr. Kalam will not only be a friend, philosopher and guide to the Government of the day, but also to the people of India in general. C. Shankar, Bangalore
