Letters to the Editor
Sir, You have rightly pointed out in your Editorial `The toll of political innocence' (June 14) that both the ruling and Opposition coalitions in Maharashtra stand exposed. The contradictions within the ruling front and the haste of the Opposition to wrest power created the stand off. Though shifting of MLAs to far off places is not quite new in India, the hectic efforts of the ruling front to save the Ministry will attract severe public criticism. While the ruling Democratic Front in the State boasts of thwarting the Opposition, it is not sure whether corrective steps will be taken to check future eruptions in the front. It seems that this is only a temporary ceasefire. The Speaker's decision, which brought the turnaround of events, may kick off a debate. The confusing anti-defection bill requires a thorough scrutiny for amendments to ensure impartial decisions by the Speakers. C.P. Velayudhan Nair, Kochi
