Hewitt & Henman in quarterfinals

LONDON June 14 Top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt and No. 2 Tim Henman each dropped only three games on Thursday as they cruised into the quarterfinals of the Queen's Club grass-court tournament.

Hewitt, the two-time defending champion, won seven straight games in one stretch as he swept Belgium's Olivier Rochus 6-2, 6-1.

``The more matches you get the better off you're going to be,'' the Australian said. ``It was two baseliners out there so it was a different kind of grass court tennis for the fans.''

Henman needed just 51 minutes to down American wild card Robby Ginepri 6-1, 6-2.

Ginepri, 19, had upset Swiss veteran Marc Rosset in the second round but had little success against the British grass-court expert.

Henman dominated the match with his serve, getting 85 percent of his first serves into play. Ginepri won only eight points in the first set as Henman conceded just one point on serve.

``I thought I hit the ball much better than in my first match,'' Henman said. ``I'd got some court time under my belt and felt used to the conditions. My serving was a lot more consistent and I made him play a lot of balls because he was standing on the baseline. So certainly no complaints today.''

Hewitt next faces ninth-seeded American Todd Martin, who posted a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 8 Xavier Malisse of Belgium. Martin conceded just eight points on serve.

``He plays really well on grass,'' Hewitt said. ``It's going to be a really tough match-up for me. I'm going to have to return extremely well and move extremely well, but it's a good preparation match for me going into Wimbledon as well.''

Americans Michael Russell and Vince Spadea both failed to follow up second-round victories over seeded opponents. Russell lost a tight match to Australia's Wayne Arthurs 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, while Spadea went down 6-4, 6-3 to Hyung-Taik Lee of South Korea.

In a match between two former Queen's Club champions, Wayne Ferreira outlasted Mark Philippoussis 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).

In a 2 hour, 10-minute battle of big serves, the 10th-seeded Ferreira buried a smash into the net to drop serve and fall behind 3-2 in the final set. He received a warning after firing a ball high over the stands.

But the South African held his concentration, broke back to 3-3 and earned match point when Philippoussis double-faulted at 5-5 in the tiebreaker. Ferreira hit a passing shot winner to close out the match.

``After I lost my serve in the third set I didn't think I stood a chance,'' Ferreria said. ``He was serving so well I thought I had no chance at all, but one lucky game kept me in it. It was just one of those days.'' Ferreira will now face Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands, who advanced to the quarterfinals when Karol Kucera retired with a strained left knee while trailing 3-1 in the first set.

Leander-Michael moves up

The third-seeded Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi of Belarus defeated Aleksandar Kitinov of Macedonia and Johan Landsberg of Sweden 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5 in the second round of the Stella Artois Championships at the Queen's Club.

The sixth-seeded Michael Llodra of France and Leander Paes beat Martin Lee and Arvind Parmar of Britain 6-3, 6-2 in their pre-quarterfinal encounter.

The results:

Lleyton Hewitt bt Olivier Rochus 6-2, 6-1; Tim Henman bt Robby Ginepri 6-1, 6-2; Todd Martin bt Xavier Malisse 7-5, 6-3; Wayne Arthurs bt Michael Russell 6-4, 3-6, 7-5; Hyung-Taik Lee bt Vince Spadea 6-4,6-3;Wayne Ferreira bt Mark Philippoussis 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5).— AP
