No polls till peace is restored: Paswan

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 14. The Lok Janshakti Party today said that elections to the Gujarat Assembly should not be held till complete peace was restored in the State and alleged that the violence there appeared "stage-managed".

The party chief and former Union Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan, who visited Baroda earlier this week, said he planned to hold fast and a peace march in the State from July 2 in an attempt to strengthen communal harmony.

Mr. Paswan, who quit the National Democratic Alliance over Gujarat, said after the approach of the Vajpayee Government towards the happenings in the State, it had lost the moral right to invoke Article 356 with regard to any other State.

He said the Modi Government "preferred" continuance of violence in the State to reap electoral advantage.

Demanding the removal of Mr. Modi, Mr. Paswan said the reports of the National Human Rights Commission and the Governor should be made public.
