Delhi leads in per capita income growth

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI JUNE 14. While Delhi continues to surge ahead of other States in terms of per capita income growth, the one-time prosperous States such as Gujarat have registered a decline.

According to an analysis of advance estimates of the last five years carried out by the Associated of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), the per capita income in Delhi was Rs.25,162 in 2000-2001, up Rs.1,130 from Rs. 24,032 in the previous year. In 1998-99, the per capita income stood at Rs. 22,977, and at Rs. 22,326 and Rs. 20,189 in 1997-98 and 1996-97.

Gujarat and Rajasthan, however, showed declining growth rates. In Gujarat, the per capita income dropped to Rs. 12,975 in 2000-01 from Rs. 13,022 in 1999-2000. The figures during the comparative years in Rajasthan were Rs. 8,088 and Rs. 8,272.

In overall terms, the advance and quick estimates reveal a sharp deceleration in the all-India per capita income, with the growth rate dwindling from 4.4 per cent in 1999-2000 to barely 1.8 per cent in 2000-2001, and recovering to 3.5 per cent in 2001-02. Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry contributed significantly to the meagre growth of per capita income in 2000-01. The per capita income in Andhra Pradesh rose from Rs. 9,318 in 1999-2000 to Rs. 9,697 in 2000-01. In the earlier years, the income was Rs. 8,531 in 1996-97, Rs. 8,214 in 1997-98 and Rs. 9,018 in 1998-99.

The per capita income in Kerala rose from Rs. 8,987 in 1996-97 to Rs.10,712 in 2000-01. In 1999-2000, it was Rs. 10,107. Likewise in Tamil Nadu, the per capita income increased from Rs. 12,504 in 1999-2000 to Rs. 12,954 in 2000-01. But, by far, the most sustained increase in per capita income has been recorded in Pondicherry where it rose from Rs. 13,468 in 1996-97 to Rs. 20,879 in 2000-2001. Compared with the earlier year (1999-2002), the per capita income rose by Rs. 984.

Among the States in the north-east, Assam witnessed an increase in per capita income from Rs. 5,978 in 1999-2000 to Rs. 6,157 in 2000-2001. In Manipur, the per capita income rose significantly by Rs. 235 at Rs. 7,479 in 2000-01 from Rs. 7,244 in 1999-2000.
