TDP urges PCC chief not to `vitiate' the atmosphere

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD June 15. The Telugu Desam has appealed to the PCC president, M. Satyanarayana Rao, not to vitiate the atmosphere for the on- going talks between Government and PWG emissaries by his 'confusing and contradictory' statements.

Talking to reporters here on Saturday, the Minister for Information and Public Relations, S. Chandramohan Reddy, faulted Mr. Satyanarayana Rao for offering to "join hands and work with the naxalites.'' Was it proper for the head of a responsible party to offer to work with a banned organisation. This was hardly the attitude when the talks were moving into a crucial phase.

Reacting to Mr. Satyanarayana Rao's comment that he did not recognise him or his statements, the Minister said, "I do not think I need an ID card from him. Pity is people in his own party do not recognise him or take him seriously.''

Answering questions, Mr. Chandramohan Reddy said the Government was not interested in "fake encounters'' and was keen on finding a permanent solution to the extremist problem.

The Minister for Law, P. Chandrasekhar, rejected the TRS leader, K. Chandrasekhar Rao's charge that the reforms initiated by the Government proved to be "noose'' choking the people of Telangana. He said without reforms and change, no society could progress.

The political reforms initiated by NT Rama Rao which saw abolition of the hereditary and feudal system of village administration and introduction of mandal system had brought a sea change in rural Telangana, as also reservation for women and the backward classes in local bodies. More recently, the Minister said, the concept of people's participation in irrigation management, watershed development, running of schools and empowerment of women through DWCRA brought about social awakening among the target groups and bettered their lives.

Mr. Chandrasekhar recalled that the TRS chief had praised Janmabhoomi and reforms when he was in the Telugu Desam, but awoke to the so-called injustices to Telangana only after parting ways.
