Letters to the Editor
Sir, The candidature of Lakshmi Sahgal for the Presidential election is remarkable in more ways than one. Apart from being the first woman to be nominated as a candidate for the post, her exceptional contribution as a freedom fighter and social worker, has been an inspiration for all concerned. But the question is why is this remarkable Indian being made a scapegoat in a Presidential election, which seems to be more of a confrontation between political adversaries. I appeal to the Left parties and the Government not to be embroiled in the symbolism of their political statement. It is time for the Government to demonstrate its national sensitivity. Let the nation have the privilege of having the service of both luminaries as President and Vice-President.
Sanjay Bhattacharya,
