Opinion - Letters to the Editor

A model Indian

Sir, — Abdul Kalam is a model Indian who has already earned his place in modern Indian history. He is modern because he has a scientific temper and secular outlook combined with a sentiment-free attitude and superstition-free approach. At a time when we need to have a President whose consensual election in itself would be a fitting reply to those who decry our country, the Left parties are advancing arguments in which there is no logic. When Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati agree, when Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi agree, when the highly individualistic Chandrababu Naidu and Bal Thackeray agree, where is the need for a contest? For the first time, an apolitical person has come forward happily to accept the highest post of the country. An opportunity has come to all parties to rise above their narrow political views. Let the stumbling blocks vanish from the scene.
