Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Science or power?

Sir, — I wish to convey the sadness and disappointment felt by me and many others, on Abdul Kalam's decision to accept the NDA proposal to make him the President. In the recent past, Dr. Kalam had publicly stated his strong desire to work for popularising science, especially among school children. Many people feel that if a person of his stature and eminence took up this cause, it would be a signal contribution to the fight against ignorance, obscurantism and all the ills associated with it. We looked forward to a concretisation of this noble idea and a coming together of like-minded people.

However Dr. Kalam's decision to fight the Presidential election implies that he has abandoned this whole idea. Of course, it is possible that he has convinced himself that as President he will be better placed to popularise science. However, this has all the markings of a mirage. Nobody has been able to do it, especially in the largely ceremonial role of President. We strongly urge Dr. Kalam to reconsider his decision and make the choice in favour of the people of India, rather than the tainted corridors of power.

Rajan Sharma,
New Delhi
