Sir, This is with reference to the news report `Modi for reforming madrassas' (June 14). If `RDX and AK47s' were recovered from a `madrassa' in Gujarat as claimed by the State Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, where is the need to reform? He should simply go for the closure of that `madrassa' and bring to book its manager. If the claim is yet another political gimmick of Mr. Modi, no one except the Almighty or the `general will' of the public can remedy such blatant charges. The Indian Muslim community needs no direction from Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia or any of the Muslim countries in matters of religion. The teachings of Islam as contained in the Koran and the words and deeds of the Prophet have enough guidance for them in the prevailing circumstances. We are a law-abiding and patriotic community, which is passing through physical torture and character assassination at the hands of fascist elements and after the genocide in Gujarat, the next round of character assassination has started. All this seems to be part of the campaign directed towards maligning the community and paving the way for interference in matters of the socio-religious identity of the Muslims for which their `madrassas' are the citadels.
A.T.M. Anwar,
