Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Two luminaries

Sir, — The nomination of Lakshmi Sahgal by the Left parties as their presidential candidate is a whimsical step. It is an unnecessary attempt to push the country towards election at a time of crisis, when our Army is on high alert at the borders and the possibility of a war has not been ruled out. At least, at the time of an emergency, it is expected of our politicians to rise above their narrow-mindedness and think in terms of the country's good. Nobody can deny that Dr. Sahgal, with her long experience in politics, has done a lot for the betterment of the citizens, and it is a matter of great honour for the country if she becomes the first woman President.

Dr. Sahgal should be made Vice-President by building up a consensus among political parties. Thus a clash between the two luminaries can be prevented.

Shraddha Maheshwari,
Delhi
