Letters to the Editor
Sir, A near half-page advertisement of the Gas Authority of India, Ltd. (GAIL) (June 5) is disheartening, to say the least. The slogan ``say `yes' to plastic, save trees'' is ridiculous and the fact that GAIL linked it to the World Environment Day only made matters worse. When the world has realised the enormously harmful potential of plastic (particularly the ``use and throw'' products) as a pollutant and is vigorously fighting for the use of bio-degradable products, GAIL chooses to insert this inane advertisement, shedding crocodile tears for our trees. What GAIL could do instead is intensify research on bio-degradable plastics and help the ongoing effort to find and popularise, alternative packaging materials such as jute, natural fibres and yes, even paper which is far safer than plastic. <122>Finally, the gratuitous advice offered by GAIL "... please, make sure you don't dispose plastic waste carelessly'' is like producing nuclear bombs and saying please handle them with care.<122>
