Letters to the Editor
Sir, In her well-researched article ``When hope finally dies'' (June 2), Anjali Mody raises a pertinent question: ``What makes a 16-year-old kill herself''. After all, when the poor farmers in Andhra Pradesh chose to die after their cotton crop failed, they had an ``explanation'' of financial ruin, abject poverty, and insurmountable debt burden. But, for a 16-year-old, could just one exam result make it all so impossibly pointless? Depression the root cause of all types of suicides has the `power' to strike at will, which even the `family doctor' may fail to notice. The present day ``no one is willing to sit down and talk about a problem'' scenario in most of the families should change for the better to ensure the survival of the beloved ones in a family.
