Over 40 injured in BDL mishap

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD JUNE 17. More than 40 persons were injured, two of them seriously, when the roof of a building under construction at the Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) for anchorage of missiles collapsed on Monday evening.

The injured persons were admitted to the Apollo Hospitals, DRDO and various other branches of the hospital in the city. The condition of two seriously injured workers — Ravi and Kishore — is said to be serious.

The 43-feet high structure was the Integrated Guided Missile Project building and it is being constructed apparently to stock the missiles. Around 120 people were working when the mishap occurred.

"The accident occurred due to the buckling of central pole which carried the load of the roof,'' said, Praneet Chandra, Assistant Commandant, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), BDL. He said not more than two or three persons were inside when it caved in.

The work, which started in October last, was nearing completion and it was being done by local contractors — Prabhakar Reddy and Raghunath Reddy.

The Additional Commissioner of Police, A.K. Khan, visited the accident site. He said it was too early to comment on the reasons for the mishap. The police would arrive at a conclusion only after technical verification. He, however, said that a case would be registered and investigations carried out.

Meanwhile, rescue operations were on by the police and the BDL officials. Private cranes were deployed and dragon lights were installed at the site. The debris was being removed to see if anyone was trapped inside. The labourers belong to Alampur, Wanaparthy and Gadwal in Mahabubnagar district and Kurnool district. Some labourers are also said to have come from Bihar.
