Southern States - Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram

New Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai express train from June 30

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JUNE 17. Electric trains would start running in the State with the introduction of the Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit in the Erode-Palakkad-Erode section from August 17, the Union Minister of State for Railways, Mr. O. Rajagopal, said today.

``The rake is getting ready and the electric train will be the Onam gift from Indian railways to Keralites. The rakes will be similar to those being used by railways for operating electric trains in Mumbai,'' Mr. Rajagopal told a press conference here.

The Minister said the frequency would be increased after the railways obtain more rakes. The electric train would be extended up to Ernakulam in the next step. The introduction of the electric train is to ease the problems faced by commuters.

Mr. Rajagopal also announced that the Ananthapuri Express would start running between Thiruvananthapuram central and Chennai Egmore from June 30. The commuters from the State capital would be able to save considerable time, as the new express train would be running via Nagercoil and Madurai covering a distance of 799 kms compared to the 910 kms via Ernakulam-Coimbatore to Chennai. The 6124 train would be operated on all days, except Sundays from Chennai and Mondays from Thiruvananthapuram Central. The train will depart from Thiruvananthapuram at 4 p.m to reach Chennai Egmore at 8-35 a.m. In the return direction, the train will depart from Chennai at 7-30 p.m to reach Thiruvananthapuram at 12-20 p.m.

The Janashatabdi Express announced in the railway budget would start running between Thiruvananthapuram Central and Ernakulam from November. The rakes will have new seating pattern and will have facilities as in Shatabdi Express. "We have decided to limit the stops for this train to ensure its punctuality,'' he said.

The Intercity Express being introduced between Ernakulam and Kozhikode will start running from November. Taking into account the heavy rush in trains to Gujarat, the railways has decided to increase two sleeper coaches and one unreserved compartments in six trains touching Gujarat from July first week.

The Foot-Over-Bridge, high level platform and other works at Edapally railway station along with the station's remodelling, new waiting hall and refreshment stall being set up by the railways at the Tiruvalla station will be commissioned by Onam. The Road Over Bridge (ROB) at Kalamassery will be commissioned on June 22.

On June 30, the railways will also commission the Automatic Teller Machine being installed at Thiruvananthapuram Central with assistance from the State Bank of India. Mr. Rajagopal said the railways would take steps to issue railway tickets through the ATM later. Mr. Rajagopal, who chaired a joint meeting of the Chief Engineers of the National Highway Authority of India, the State PWD and the railways here today, said steps would be taken by all concerned to avoid the delay in the land acquisition and construction of approach road for the proposed ROB at Edapally.

To a query on the delay in commissioning the ROB at Chakkai along the NH bypass in the State capital, the Minister said the railways work was almost over. "The PWD has sought more time and the ROB would be commissioned by March next.''

As part of railway's observance of Passenger Amenities Year, computerised reservation system would be introduced at Varkala from November and at Karungapally from January 1, 2003.
