Tamil Nadu
By Our Staff Reporter
The State committee, which discussed various issues confronting the labour force and the common men, also expressed its willingness to lead the like-minded forces against such `shameful acts' that were perpetrated against the very spirit of democracy. The State unit secretary, N.Varadarajan, briefing reporters said the repoll ordered in a few booths in Saidapet was an `eyewash.' The repoll should have been held in the entire assembly segment. The party, after a thorough study, had felt the pangs of pain amid a section of the people in Tamil Nadu in the aftermath of the Gujarat violence. Hence it had decided to strengthen the National Platform of Mass Organisations to spread the message of secularism and religious amity. "The campaign would be launched from June 27 to July 4'', Mr.Varadarajan said. The committee warned the Government against privatisation of the transport sector. Such a decision would affect nearly 60 lakh students, who were availing themselves of the free bus passes. The party took exception to the Central Government's unilateral decision to include one sect of tribes from Tamil Nadu in the national level list of scheduled tribes. The Centre had initiated a process of including new sects in the list after a gap of 25 years following the approval of the Union Cabinet recently. Tamil Nadu had been demanding inclusion of Kanikaran (Tirunelveli district), Kurumba, Kurumbar, Narikoravas, Malayalai (Erode district), Padagar and Lambadi in the list. But the Government had included Kanikaran sect only.
