Avinash Chandrasekhar (13), studying in Standard VIII, participated in the global level contest conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Jet Propulsion Labs, in which students from 60 countries participated. Eight, including the city boy, were finally selected for the programme about research on planet Mars. The selection was done after a group discussion, personal interview and teleconference. The boy returned here after completing the training at the NASA centre in the U.S. The student's mother petitioned the Chief Minister's Cell saying the family had spent nearly Rs.2 lakhs to enable the boy to participate in the programme. The petition sought government assistance in recognition of the youngster's achivement. Today, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa called Avinash and his family members to the Secretariat and handed over the cheque for Rs.1 lakh. She also presented him with another cheque for Rs.1.51 lakhs on behalf of the MGR Trust. She appreciated his achievement and wished him well so that he could grow into an eminent scientist like A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
