SC dismisses petition against Presidential poll

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI June 17. The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition for a direction to the Election Commission to hold the Presidential election only after fresh and clear guidelines were laid down by the apex court.

A vacation Bench, comprising Justice Ruma Pal and Justice Ashok Bhan, dismissed the petition filed by a Calcutta-based advocate, Ram Chandra Prasad, who contended that under the present guidelines he could not contest the election for the office of President. Under the Commission guidelines, 50 members of the electoral college should propose a candidate and another 50 should second that person. This provision denied him an opportunity to contest the election.
