Thackeray calls on Alexander

By Mahesh Vijapurkar

MUMBAI June 17. A 50-minute meeting between the Shiv Sena leader, Bal Thackeray, and the Maharashtra Governor, P.C. Alexander, today triggered speculation that the latter's consent may have been sought on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance for the post of Vice-President. But all that the Raj Bhavan was willing to say was that it was a courtesy call by the Sena supremo, who was accompanied by his son, Uddhav Thackeray.

Dr. Alexander was the ruling NDA's earlier choice for President and Mr. Thackeray backed that idea but later, new turns and twists led to A.P.J. Abdul Kalam emerging as the candidate.

One suggestion is that the recent developments in Maharashtra, where the Sena, in the company of the BJP, failed to dislodge the Democratic Front, may have figured in the talks.
