Dr. Alexander was the ruling NDA's earlier choice for President and Mr. Thackeray backed that idea but later, new turns and twists led to A.P.J. Abdul Kalam emerging as the candidate. One suggestion is that the recent developments in Maharashtra, where the Sena, in the company of the BJP, failed to dislodge the Democratic Front, may have figured in the talks.
