Guard tribal people's interests, CM urged

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE JUNE 17. DEED, an NGO working for the uplift of tribal people, has urged the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, to direct the Deputy Commissioner, Mysore, to distribute land to the Jenukurubas, who have been displaced from the Nagarahole National Park, in Hunsur taluk.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, which was released to the Press here today, it said that there were around 130 Jenukuruba families, which had been displaced from forests coming under national park. These families had been allotted land at Dasanapura by the Government in 1994-95, it said. The DEED, however, said that despite repeated requests, the Revenue officials had not implemented the Government Order, which had resulted in the tribal people being deprived of the land. It said that "Saguvali" chits had been issued to 90 Jenukuruba families, and that around 37 Saguvali holders had to be given the possession of land.

The NGO regretted that even though the order was issued eight years ago, the order had not been implemented in full. In the meantime, the land meant for distribution among tribal people had been encroached by Hakki-Pikki tribes and others.

The Hakki-Pikki tribes were not forest dwellers and had not been displaced from forests, and that they had illegally occupied the land meant for displaced tribes, it said.

The DEED expressed fear that the officials might yield to the pressure of local groups that had occupied the land, and might even allot it to them. It said that efforts were being made to cancel the allotted land that was in favour of Jenukuruba tribes and sanction it to the illegal occupants based on Bagar hukum cultivation.he NGO urged the Chief Minister to direct the Social Welfare Minister and the Revenue Minister to supervise the distribution of land to the tribal people. It said that the allotment of land to the displaced tribal people was in line with the decisions taken during the mini-cabinet meeting in the district.
