Ms. Panwar informed that the conference revolved around the issue of growing awareness among people about the power of information technology in local governance. Mayors of different cities from all over the world, including that of the U.S., New Zealand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Ireland, Hong Kong, Italy and Sri Lanka attended the meeting, she added. The Mayor said at the two-day conference held from June 12 at Shanghai, many delegates gave an account of the efforts being made by various municipalities to introduce information technology to widen the areas of interaction between the local government and the people. The topic included activities like redressal of citizens' grievances, payment of taxes levied by local bodies, information on services provided by municipalities, private-public partnership and the need to set up global networks to exchange information on problems and solutions relating to the Asia- Pacific region, the Mayor informed.
